His work relates black holes to the Big Bang theory, which he helped popularize. He also penned the best-seller “A Brief History of Time,” which explores questions of time and the universe.
In the early part of his career, Hawking was a physicist and cosmologist. He lived in Cambridge, but went to Caltech in Pasadena, California, for an academic year. He found the facilities at Caltech to be much better than at Cambridge. During his stay, the university installed wheelchair ramps in the building, which helped him move around. He also gave a major seminar on Hawking radiation at Caltech, where he was a guest of Richard Feynman. During his time at Caltech, Hawking also visited the Vatican archives, where he read the recantation of Galileo.
In the late eighties, Hawking suffered a severe case of pneumonia. After this experience, his degenerative disease slowed down. A tracheotomy was necessary to save his life, but the tracheotomy prevented Hawking from speaking. He eventually had to rely on a computerized speech synthesizer. As his disease progressed, his relationship with Jane Hawking deteriorated. Despite his physical limitations, Hawking continued to work, and he became one of the world’s leading experts on Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity.
